NautaCharts for developers
Chart context for the software you build.
NautaCharts supplies electronic navigational chart (ENC) layers for MapLibre GL JS and Mapbox GL JS. Add European inland waterways and USA coastal charts to fleet dashboards, GIS tools and maritime applications.
The chart information behind the map
Depth areas and contours, buoys and beacons, lights, bridges, anchorages, restricted areas and inland navigation objects are delivered as vector features. Zoom into the live map above to explore the portrayal.
- Coverage
- European inland waterways and USA coastal waters. Availability depends on the source charts.
- Integration
- One chart source and a JavaScript plugin. Your application keeps its base map, camera and vessel overlays.
- Display
- Day, dusk and dark themes, plus controls for chart layer visibility.
Built for the map you already have
Bring chart context into fleet monitoring, port operations, route-planning interfaces and spatial analysis. NautaCharts provides the chart display layer; vessel tracking, route calculation and application workflows remain yours.
Hosted PMTiles archives use HTTP byte-range requests, so a browser fetches the portions needed for its current view. The standalone plugin installs nautical styles and sprites without replacing the host map.
How hosted marine vector charts work →Common questions
Does NautaCharts work with Mapbox and MapLibre?
Yes. Both use the same chart style plugin. MapLibre applications register a PMTiles protocol; supported Mapbox applications use their host-owned PMTiles source. The documentation includes both integration paths.
Can I keep AIS and fleet overlays above the charts?
Yes. Set the plugin’s insertion layer to keep vessel, AIS and operational layers above the nautical chart layers.
Is this a navigation app or a routing engine?
NautaCharts is a chart display and delivery service for software teams. It does not replace your navigation application or provide a route calculation engine.
Is every European waterway covered?
No. Coverage follows available chart datasets and is not continuous across every waterway. Check the map and discuss your operating region before integrating.
